When Ghosts Speak: Understanding the World of Earthbound Spirits by Mary Ann Winkowski

When Ghosts Speak by Mary Ann Winkowski falls amid the plethora of books written by self-proclaimed paranormal "experts." Winkowski, from a young age, has seen and conversed with earthbound spirits (ghosts); she now uses her abilities to solve crimes, help people rid their homes of spiritual activity, and has been a consultant for television shows (most notably Ghost Whisperer).

While these paranormal "experts" are interesting, it is unfortunate that others (such as Sylvia Browne, Long Island Medium, Derek Acorah, et al) have given them a bad name. I like to approach all subjects with an open mind but I reluctantly admit that Mary Ann Winkowski, to me, is just another expert with big quotation marks.

I am a believer in the paranormal and the subject interests me very much. I just always put up a guard whenever someone touts their narrative/beliefs as the only correct way. The paranormal is as vast and varied as the Universe, as individual as human beings. No one will every really know the truth of what the other side is like. To Winkowski's credit, however, she admits that she doesn't have all of the answers and doesn't try to say that she's a medium or knows all of the answers to the After Life.

Regardless, her book does offer some good insights and anecdotes of her time as a "ghost whisperer." She gives useful tips as to how to rid earthbound spirits from places (and people) and how to prevent them from getting attached to people. Furthermore, she discusses evil spirits and demons which, although may seem similar to earthbound spirits, are really in their own category.

The drawback to this text is that there are a lot of typos and grammatical errors that sometimes make it hard to follow the narrative. When I read a book, these errors always jump out at me and I find myself impatient with the lack of proper editing.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book because Winkowski provides some good stories and theories. She is helpful to the reader and helps spread interest in the paranormal. Side note: A couple of weekends ago I took a tour at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, CA. Our tour guide noted that spiritualism is not as popular as it used to be in Sarah Winchester's time (19th and early 20th centuries) but I beg to differ. While there was a huge surge of spiritualism during the Victorian era, there is a huge surge of it in today's world. With emphasis on New Age Spirituality, to mediumship, and psychics, it is still very much alive.
